Bill & Cath Costley & family.
In 1950, Lochgreen was purchased by aviation pioneer, David McIntyre. He was eager to move his family from inland Cushats, near Coylton, which was once the dower house of Sundrum Castle, to be nearer his workplace of Prestwick Airport and the amenities and activities to be found in Troon – as is now, the wonderful nearly golf courses, bustling town & beaches were quite a draw!
Now fondly remembered as the “Prestwick Pioneer”, David McIntyre is often cited as one of the unsung heroes of Scottish Aviation. Not only did he establish an RAF training centre during the Second World War, thereafter developing the base with Douglas Douglas-Hamilton to become Prestwick Airport & situate their aircraft company, Scottish Aviation, he (co-piloted by Douglas Hamilton) was also the first man to fly over Everest (1933).
Lochgreen House stayed in the hands of the McIntyre family until hot off the heels of transforming nearby Highgrove House into a hotel, Bill & Cath Costley bought the property in 1989. As a boy, Bill delivered bread to Lochgreen in disbelief a single family could live in a house of such size and grandeur. As an adult, he was equally amazed to be able to afford to buy it!
